General

• Chinese characters are coded in BIG-5. This code set is selected by default and will produce an incorrect display of some Western letters, such as the u-Umlaut (ü). By setting the webbrower's character coding (Internet Explorer: encoding options) to Western IBM 850 (IE: Middle European DOS) Western writing will be shown correctly but the Chinese characters will become garbled.
  
• Chinese transliteration ist Pinyin throughout (excluding works with titles or authors in other transliterations).

Personal Names (Pinyin/Western languages)

• All surnames have to be separated by a comma, including Chinese surnames: "Sima, Xiangru", "Xu, Shen" etc. (pseudonyms are written with a hyphen: "a-cheng", "ba-jin" etc.)

Title keywords and subject headings (Pinyin/Western languages)

• Subject headings are in English: "happiness", "sleep", "confucianism" etc.
• Polysyllabic Chinese words (including geographical and personal names) are not to be separated with blank or hyphen: "zhongguo", "zhejiang", "laozi", "sima xiangru", "yuyanxue", "fajia" etc.

Exact title (Pinyin/Western languages)

• To search for exact Chinese titles every syllable has to be separated by a blank: "zhong guo fu nue shi lun wen ji", (NOT: "zhongguo funue shi lunwenji").
